Black Mold and its Effects on Infants and Children

Infants and children are the most vulnerable members of our households. We strive to make sure that they can thrive in a safe and clean environment. For example, the government has very strict regulations on the amount of lead-based paint present in new houses. However, relatively little attention is given to the effects that black mold can have on young ones. We at Conejo Restoration think that is wrong. It is time that people are made aware of all the data that shows how harmful mold can be to children and infants. We believe this knowledge, along with engaging the right mold remediation experts, is the key to protecting our children.

Mold Allergy Symptoms in Children

Mold symptoms in children are nearly the same as they are in adults. The main difference between mold symptoms in children vs. adults is that children can suffer from severe infections as a result of mold exposure. Moreover, since mold symptoms can mimic benign conditions such as hay fever, it can be more difficult to detect in children. Symptoms of mold allergies in children include:

  • Wheezing
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Sneezing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Coughing
  • Worsening of asthma symptoms

Potential Long Term Effects

Research suggest that children who are exposed to prolong mold exposure may be vulnerable to several more serious conditions such as Idiopathic Pulmonary Hemorrhage (IPH) – an acute bleeding in the lungs that can quickly lead to respiratory distress – central nervous system damage and skin rashes. This is why you should familiarize yourself with the above symptoms of mold exposure in your child.

How to Protect your Child from Mold

As a company that handles black mold in Thousand Oaks and as parents ourselves, we know it would be remiss if we did not offer tips on protecting your children from the harmful effects of mold. Apart from our remediation services we would like to offer the following advice on reducing mold in your home.

  • Keep humidity below 60% in your home: You can do this by fixing leaky plumbing, insulating cold water pipes, sloping water away from your home etc.
  • Use air conditioners and/or dehumidifiers: Both of these common household appliances can reduce the general level of humidity in your home. However, air conditioners themselves can contribute to humidity levels if certain preventative steps are not taken. For example, make sure that your air conditioner’s drip pan is emptied often and cleaned to prevent the formation of mold.
  • Do not store outside items near your home such as leaves, firewood, compost, etc. These items can quickly accumulate mold and make your home a very unhealthy environment.

Finally, our children depend on us to create for them a healthy environment in which they can flourish and develop. We can do so by watching for the symptoms of mold allergies and by reacting immediately when they are displayed in our kids. As a final word, mold can and often does appear after a house flood. We at Conejo Restoration also specialize in flood damage control and remediation.
