Fire Damage can be avoided – How to Protect your Property

A fire damages more than just the property. It also impacts the lives of the people associated with the property be it a family or an employees in a commercial establishment. Smoke, ash, soot, damage to items and material, the odor and the ensuing structural damage to the building are the results of fire damage. And while you cannot completely eliminate the chances of a fire occurring at your property, there are a number of preventive steps you can take to reduce the chances of damage by fire to both life and property.

Install Smoke Alarms

By default, most homes and commercial properties do have fire alarms. The best kind of smoke alarm is one that responds to both flames and smoldering fire. Fire alarms also need to be loud and visible to warn everyone of a potential fire breakout.

Ensure the Smoke Alarms are in Proper Working Condition

Once you have installed a smoke alarm, it is crucial that you ensure proper maintenance. You don’t want to be caught in a situation where a fire could have been avoided but it occurred simply because the smoke alarm was faulty.  So check your smoke alarms periodically. Also, make sure that the entire property is under the scanner of the smoke alarm. In addition to covering all common areas of the property, make sure you have smoke alarms installed in every room as well.

Keep an Eye out for Electrical Appliances

We live in a smart world and most of us are gadget dependent. Obviously you cannot get rid of all electrical appliances and wiring. But what you can do is to try and avoid a build-up of electrical appliances and wires that you can do without. Don’t overload your electrical system as well. Check the outlets periodically and if you notice any unusual heating when using an appliance or if you see sparking and detect a burning smell, immediately shut down the appliance and have it looked at by an expert.

Follow Best Practices

There are certain ground rules which if followed, can largely bring down the chances of a fire. Flammable substances come with clearly printed warnings. All you have to do is follow them. Be careful anytime you are handling fire (incense sticks, scented candles, normal candles, and cooking stove etc.) because one small misstep could lead to a damaging fire. Caution definitely is one of your best defenses against a fire.

Be Prepared for the Worse

Anytime there is a fire, and if you cannot do much to control it or douse it, then it is time to get out of the building and away from the danger of the fire. To do this you need to have an escape plan of action. Every member of the family, and in the case of a commercial set up the workers, need to be made aware of the escape plan. Take mock drills seriously because your life, the life of your family, and the lives of people around you could depend on it.
