Fire Safety Tips for the Holiday

The holidays not only bring with them the joy of warm family reunions, meals with loved ones and presents, they can also bring with them potential dangers. What dangers? Well, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Christmas tree fires cause hundreds of injuries and deaths each year in the United States alone. Moreover, this beloved holiday staple – when improperly handled – also causes millions in property loss and damage. This is why as unpleasant as the thought may be, homeowners should be cautious when celebrating this festive time of year. We at Conejo Restoration want to make sure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday. With that in mind, we would like to offer you some helpful suggestions on keeping your family safe from some common holiday hazards.

  • Trees: As we stated, tree fires are not uncommon during the holiday season and are a major cause of injuries, death and property damage. To lessen the chance of fire, purchase trees that are labeled “fire resistant.” Also, keep your tree away from fireplaces, furnaces, space heaters, etc. Next, if you have a natural tree make sure it is well hydrated. Keep the base filled with water and occasionally spritz the tree with a spray bottle. A dry, brittle tree is more susceptible to catching fire.
  • Lights: The beauty and wonder of holiday lights can hide the dangers that they can present. First, make sure that any lighting you use has been safety UL tested. Next, check your old lighting for frayed or exposed wires, bad connections, cracked sockets, etc. Finally, never overload your sockets with too many devices.
  • Decorations: Some holiday decorations can be extremely flammable. Try to use only nonflammable ornaments when possible. As with Christmas trees, try to keep decorations away from heating vents, radiators, and open flames.
  • The kitchen: Naturally the holiday means that people will spend more time in the kitchen than at other times of the year. Be sure that all of your appliances are working properly. Also, check your home for broken wires, faulty connections, or possible gas leaks before preparing those holiday meals.

Unfortunately, along with fire, mold dangers often follow. That is because of the water that is used to put out a fire can lead homeowners to require restoration water damage experts. Finally, the Red Cross has more safety tips for the holiday season on its site. At Conejo Restoration, we want to help you enjoy this special time with friends and loved ones. We can do so by offering you these tips and by ensuring you that in the event that the unthinkable does happen we can step right in and handle fire damage restoration.
