Tips for Preparing Your Home for Spring and Summer Storms

We are already well into spring and summer is right around the corner. Already, some of us are experiencing one of the few downsides to those two seasons – storms. Sudden torrential rains can not only ruin an otherwise perfect spring or summer day, they can also cause sewers and streams to overflow and wreak general havoc all around. Added to all that, these sudden spring and summer storms can lead to a house flood and all the problems that come with it, e.g., mold, etc. However, homeowners can be proactive and reduce the chances that such a disaster will occur. Follow the tips below to make sure your family and home are ready for a happy, safe spring and summer season.

  • Clean your gutters: Clear your gutters each season of debris such as leaves, mud, twigs, etc. A buildup of debris can actually cause the wood on the side of your home to rot. In addition to hand cleaning your gutter, be sure to remove any leftover gunk with a garden hose.
  • Have your roof and siding inspected. Make sure that you do not have any existing roof or siding problems that could cause leaking during a storm. A licensed contractor can inspect these to be sure that they can hold up to rain and high winds. If you do have loose siding or missing shingles, have them replaced now.
  • Grade your yard: Make sure that if your home has a slope around it that it leads away from your home. (Check with your local lawn company for this service.) Grading your lawn properly will keep rain water from sitting up by your foundation and causing damage. This is especially important if you own a pool.
  • Check foundation vents: A crawl space that is clean and clear of debris helps improve air circulation thus preventing excessive moisture and mold growth. Clean the vents by hand or vacuum to prevent this and to prevent critters from burrowing under or into your home.
  • Check your homeowner’s insurance: By law, some insured lenders require homeowners to have flood insurance in certain high risk areas. However, even properties that are not in high risk flood areas can experience emergencies. Be sure that you have enough coverage in the event that a flood occurs.spring storm

By taking a few precautions you can protect your home and reduce the chances that it will be damaged by the stray spring and/or summer storm. Flooding causes all kinds of damage to property and can require mold removal in some cases. More importantly, floods change lives in undesirable ways. For flood damage restoration in Thousand Oaks, we are unmatched in our ability to help families recover from disasters.
